SHORT FILM: Lamp Life (2020, Valerie LaPointe)

Lamp Life Poster

Short film Lamp Life is part of Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. Still overjoyed to be reunited, Woody (Jim Hanks) asks Bo Peep (Annie Potts) what happened for her during their years apart that led to her pursuing a life of freedom, and she details for him what happened to her and the sheep in the years between the events of Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 4.

PROS

  • As one would expect from Pixar, the animation quality is absolutely stunning, with a rich colour palette, bags of detail and a natural quality to the lighting.
  • A fast-paced and concise narrative which is deftly directed with care and precision, and has a good balance between drama and humour.
  • Annie Potts once again voices Bo with oodles of passion and enthusiasm, making her an engaging protagonist.

CONS

  • Noticeable inconsistencies with how easily Bo can break, while only one of her two mended breaks is explained.
  • Casting Jim Hanks as Woody instead of Tom was an error, as the different voice is noticeable as Jim’s voice lacks the same natural warmth as Tom’s.

VERDICT: 7/10
